What are the Yoga Sutras?
The Yoga Sūtras were transcribed around 2,000 years ago as the foundational text of Yoga. The author, Patañjali, is not the founder of Yoga. Rather, he was the first to compile Yoga’s teachings into text, which had only been passed down verbally. There are 196 Sūtras (threads) of Yogic wisdom divided into four Pādas (chapters):
Samādhi Pāda: The chapter on meditative absorption. It answers the questions what is Yoga? and why practice Yoga? It breaks down the types of mental activities, the stages of Samādhi, the concept of devotion, the meaning of OM, the distractions of the mind, and how to overcome them.
Sādhana Pāda: The chapter on practice. It outlines Kriyā Yoga, which is the solution to the Kleshas, or the mental afflictions that cause all suffering. It also explores Karma, Samskaras, and perhaps most notably - the 8 Limbs of Yoga.
Vibhūti Pāda: The chapter on spiritual powers. It discusses Samyama and how it can lead toward Siddhis or extraordinary powers. This is where the idea of transcendence becomes interesting.
Kaivalya Pāda: The chapter on liberation. It discusses the isolation + transcendence of the soul from the illusion of our minds, disentangling from Karma, Samskaras, and the Gunas (qualities of nature).
For the purpose of this course, we will only be focusing on Pāda I, Pāda II, and the beginning of Pāda III. This is because the first two Pādas are the most practical and applicable to how Yoga can fit into our modern lives. Pādas III + IV may apply more directly to monks, sadhus, ascetics, or sannyasins - those who fully renounce material life in search of liberation or truth
