What are the Yoga Sutras?
The Yoga Sūtras were transcribed in Sanskrit around 2,000 years ago as the foundational text of Yoga. The author, Patañjali, is not the founder of Yoga. Rather, he was the first to efficiently compile Yoga’s teachings into text, which had only been passed down verbally. There are 196 Sūtras (threads) of Yogic wisdom divided into four Pādas (chapters):
Samādhi Pāda: The chapter on meditative absorption. It answers: What is Yoga? Why practice it? It breaks down the types of mental activities, the stages of Samādhi, the concept of devotion, the meaning of OM, the distractions of the mind, and how to overcome them.
Sādhana Pāda: The chapter on practice. It outlines Kriyā Yoga as the solution to the Kleshas, or the mental afflictions that cause suffering. It also explores Karma, Samskaras, and the 8 Limbs of Yoga.
Vibhūti Pāda: The chapter on spiritual powers. It discusses Samyama and how it can lead toward Siddhis or extraordinary powers.
Kaivalya Pāda: The chapter on liberation. It discusses the isolation + transcendence of the soul from the illusion of our minds.
For this course, we’ll focus on Pāda I, Pāda II, and the beginning of Pāda III. These parts are the most practical and relevant to modern Yoga practitioners. The final two chapters lean more toward ascetics and renunciates seeking to transcend the material world.
