Mindfulness is Like a Filter
Yoga believes that at our core, each of us exists in an equilibrium state of peace and contentment. But the fluctuations of our minds (our thoughts) are quick to remove us from this peaceful equilibrium. Whether these thoughts are judgments, emotions, stories, memories, or projections, they remove us from the present moment. These thoughts turn into our words which become actions and eventually this creates the person that we are.
Mindfulness is a filter. We have millions of thoughts — which ones would you like to allow through? Which ones would you like to manifest into reality? Which ones are coming from a place of compassion and which are coming from negativity.
At the beginning of our mindfulness or meditation practice, the filter can feel weak, like almost anything is being allowed through — like a weak cup of coffee with a bunch of grounds sitting at the bottom. But over time adn with consistent practice, the filter becomes stronger. The harmful thoughts are weeded out and the beautiful thoughts are turned into reality; a bold, smooth, flavorful cup of coffee.
