What is Prānāyāma? An overview of its history, etymology, and place within yoga.
Introduction to the classical Hatha Yoga texts, and what breath techniques are included.
A roadmap of the course ahead and introducing our guest teachers.
Opening prānāyāma practice.

Ānāpāna (breath awareness), Ujjāyī (victorious breath), Sama Vritti (equal breath), and Vishama Vritti (unequal breath).
How changing the ratio or length of the breath changes the experience.
Context of why Ujjāyī became so popular within the Āsana practice.

Anatomy of the respiratory system.
The nervous system and breath regulation.
Gas exchanges and the Bohr effect.
How posture and movement affect the breath.
Guided breath exploration with Nicole.

Nādī Śodhana (alternate nostril breathing), Sūrya Bhedana (solar breathing), and Chandra Bhedana (lunar breathing).
An introduction to idā, pingalā, and the relationship between the nostrils and nādīs in Hatha Yoga.

The theory behind Katonah Yoga’s approach to Prānāyāma, which incorporates elements of Kundalini, metaphor, imagination, creativity, and traditional techniques.
Guided practice with Ty, a masterful Katonah Yoga teacher based in Paris, France.

Kapālabhāti (skull-shining breath) and Bhastrikā (bellows breath) as fiery, energetic, and purifying techniques.
Śītalī (cooling breath), Sītkārī (hissing breath), and Bhrāmarī (humming bee breath) as soothing, steadying, and down-regulating techniques.

This offering seeks to help students establish and sustain a pranayama and meditation practice.
We will cover techniques that are accessible to all levels, and discuss the benefits of daily practice.

Ty Watson is a skilled teacher based in Paris. His perspective includes Hatha yoga, Daoism, philosophy, and the Katonah Yoga® canon. Ty leans on metaphor and cultural references in his teaching, and appreciates techniques that are simple and repeatable.
Ty will offer a lecture & Katonah® Prānāyāma.
Nicole Wild is the creator of The Collective School of Yoga, where she offers 200 & 300 hour teacher trainings. She is a skilled anatomy teacher, and has spent hundreds of hours in cadaver labs studying the human body using holistic methodologies.
Nicole will be teaching Anatomy of Prānāyāma.
J Miles is a Yogi, martial artist, body worker, retired breakdancer, community activist, the son of a Baptist minister, and has been teaching yoga, eastern arts, and philosophy for over 20 years. He is founder of Maha Vira Yoga and Project Yoga Richmond.
J will be leading a prānāyāma workshop called Inner Dimensions of the Self.
Live on Zoom (July 1—27, 2027) and recorded for replay with 1 full year of unlimited access. Live attendance is encouraged but not necessary. Students can ask questions during live calls or afterward, using a form.
Each session is 75 minutes, including a lecture and a seated practice. Lectures will break down various topics, methods, and practices, and then we’ll put them into practice and learn through experience.
